Elephant Trunk Hill 象鼻山

This rock formation, situated in south Guilin, appears to be a gigantic elephant stooping to drink from the Lijiang River.  Local legend states that it is an elephant belonging to the Emperor of Heaven, which escaped its master to live on earth. When he one day discovered it drinking at the waters edge, the furious Emporer turned it to stone.  The cave that makes up the elephant's trunk and forelegs has inspired many poets and writers, who have stopped here to engrave verses in its walls.  Half way up the hill, the aptly-named Elephant Eye Cave provides stunning views of the river and an ideal resting point for tenacious climbers en route to the Puxian Ta Pagoda at the summit.
