Located on the upper reaches of the Changjiang (Yangtze) River, Chongqing Municipality is the largest industrial and commercial center in the southwest China. With some 3000 years of historyand a registered population of over 30 million, it is regarded as a "mountain city" because of its buildings on hillsides and mountains. The climate here is often cloudy and misty, so it is called the "fog city". Also, its hot climate in summer makes the city gain the name of "furnace city". All in all, Chongqing is the best place to start a boat excursion and tour the world-famous Three Gorges on the Changjiang River. It is also the home of the famous Chongqing hotpot.
Tour Itinerary:
Day01 Chongqing
We meet you at the airport in Chongqing and transfer you to the hotel.
Day02 Chongqing-Dazu (B, L)
Today we head for the suburb of Chongqing named Dazu. You can take a scenic ride through the rice terraces to the Dazu grottoes which invlove thousands of cliff-carvings and statues dated from the Tang to the Song Dynasties. Then, you will be transferred to Chongqing and have a leisurely city tour which includes the visits of the Stillwell Museum, People's square and old city named Ciqikou. Finally, we will set you off to Yangtze cruise.
Day03 Yangtze River (B, L, D)
You will begin your cruise down the mighty Yangtze River. You can relax in the lounge or on deck as you cruise past some of the most magnificent scenery. On the way, you can enjoy the wonderful scenery of Shibaozhai or Precious Stone Stronghold. This bright red 12-story pagoda is built against a sheer cliff overlooking the river during the Qing Dynasty in 1650.
Day04 Yangtze River (B, L, D)
This morning you'll cruise through the spectacular Qutang Gorge, the narrowest and most dramatic one of the Three Gorges, with limestone peaks rising over 4,000 feet. Today's shore excursion is to the Lesser Three Gorges, where you'll travel along one of the Yangtze's tributaries. Furthermore, you can pass through steep, scenic gorges previously inaccessible to tourists and view historical sites such as the 2000-year old hanging coffins of the Ba people as well as an ancient plank road carved into the side of a cliff. In the afternoon you will continue through the Wu Gorge, noted for its sheer cliffs and 12 cloud covered mountains including Goddess Peak, which can protects the boatmen of the river from 12 dragons in the legends.
Day05 Yangtze River (B, L)
This morning you'll cruise through the Three Gorges Dam's 5-stage locks. With the width of 1.3 miles wide and the height of 610 feet, this is the world's largest dam. During this afternoon's shore excursion you'll get a birds-eye view of the entire project. Afterwards, you go on to cruise through the Xiling Gorge which is noted for its narrow, steep cliffs and swirling rapids. Then you will land in Yichang where you will be sent off at the airport and head for your next destination.
